Living with arthritis pain in knees can make daily movement feel like a challenge. Whether you’re climbing stairs, walking around the grocery store, or trying to stay active, persistent knee pain can interfere with your quality of life. Fortunately, physical therapy offers a proven way to reduce pain, improve strength, and restore function. At Infinity Physical Therapy, we use evidence-based strategies to help you move with more comfort and confidence.
Below, we answer some of the most common questions patients ask about physical therapy and its role in treating arthritis pain in the knees.
Your Arthritis Pain Question Answered
What causes arthritis pain in the knees to get worse?
Knee arthritis is typically caused by wear and tear of the cartilage in the joint, often due to age or repeated stress. Symptoms may worsen when:
- You stay inactive for long periods
- You gain weight and increase stress on the joint
- You use poor movement mechanics
- You do not stretch or strengthen the surrounding muscles
Physical therapy can identify and correct the movement patterns and muscular weaknesses that contribute to joint strain. Staying active with safe exercises also keeps the joints healthier in the long run.
Can physical therapy really reduce arthritis pain in the knees?
Yes. Physical therapy is often one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for arthritis pain in knees. It works by improving how your joints move, strengthening supporting muscles, and teaching strategies to reduce stress on the knee. Manual therapy techniques and guided stretching can help restore mobility, while specific exercises increase endurance and joint stability.
What kind of treatments should I expect during a physical therapy session?
At Infinity Physical Therapy, your treatment plan is customized to your needs. Common physical therapy treatments for knee arthritis include:
- Joint mobilization to improve movement
- Manual soft tissue work to reduce muscle tension
- Guided strengthening exercises for the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hips
- Neuromuscular re-education to improve coordination
- Balance and gait training
- Personalized home exercise plans
All care is delivered in phases, based on your current pain level and progress over time.
How long before I start to feel better?
Many patients notice a reduction in symptoms within a few weeks, especially when they stay consistent with their sessions and home program. However, every case is different. The duration of therapy depends on your starting condition, your goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Your therapist will track progress and adjust your plan as needed to help you move toward pain relief and improved function.
Will exercise make my arthritis pain worse?
Not when done properly. Inactivity can actually make arthritis symptoms worse over time. Therapeutic exercises provided by a physical therapist are carefully selected to avoid irritation and promote healing. These movements build strength and improve flexibility without overloading your joints.
Our team will show you how to move safely, protect your knees during activity, and gradually return to tasks that once felt too difficult.
Is physical therapy still helpful if I already take medication for arthritis?
Yes. While medication can reduce inflammation and ease discomfort, it does not improve how your body moves or functions. Physical therapy addresses the root causes of knee pain, including weak muscles, poor posture, and faulty movement habits. Using therapy alongside medication often leads to better long-term outcomes and may reduce your reliance on drugs over time.
Do I need a referral to start physical therapy for arthritis pain in knees?
In many cases, no referral is required. You can call Infinity Physical Therapy directly to schedule an evaluation. If a referral is necessary for your insurance, we can help you coordinate with your healthcare provider. Early intervention leads to better results, so don’t wait until symptoms become severe.
How do I maintain progress after therapy ends?
We will send you home with a tailored maintenance program that includes strengthening, mobility, and posture exercises. Staying consistent with this routine helps maintain joint health and prevent flare-ups. You will also receive strategies for managing pain, pacing your activity, and modifying tasks that place too much strain on your knees.
