Shrug Off Shoulder Pain This Fall
At 63, John had always been the kind of person who believed in the power of a good day’s work. His garden was his pride, and weekends were often spent tending to his backyard. However, one autumn afternoon, while clearing out overgrown bushes, John felt a sharp pain in his shoulder.
Brushing it off as a muscle strain, he expected it to pass with a little rest. But as days turned into a week, the pain persisted, disrupting his sleep and making simple tasks like lifting objects overhead challenging and sometimes impossible.
Reluctantly, John decided to consult our physical therapists at Infinity Physical Therapy, suspecting that it might be more than just a strain. His physical therapist, after a detailed assessment, suggested that John might have a rotator cuff injury — a common issue among active individuals over 60, likely not the result of one day’s work but a culmination of wear and tear over the years.
The Physical Therapy Program
The program began with a thorough evaluation of John’s shoulder, including range of motion, strength, and functional movement tests. The physical therapist also focused on John’s pain levels, understanding that pain management was a priority, especially to improve his sleep quality.
Manual Therapy Techniques
The initial phase of treatment involved manual therapy, including gentle joint mobilizations and soft tissue massage around the shoulder to reduce stiffness and alleviate pain. These sessions provided immediate relief and prepared John’s shoulder for more intensive exercises.
Mobility Exercises
Once the pain was manageable, John was introduced to mobility exercises aimed at improving his range of motion. He learned targeted exercises based on his specific limitations, performing them both in therapy sessions and at home to help restore shoulder movement.
Strengthening Exercises
As mobility improved, the focus shifted to strengthening the muscles around the shoulder, especially the rotator cuff — crucial for stability and preventing future injuries. With resistance bands and weights, John built strength under his therapist’s watchful eye.
Functional Training
Understanding John’s eagerness to return to his yard work, his therapist incorporated functional training into the program — specific movements and tasks that simulated his typical activities, ensuring his shoulder could handle the demands of his hobby.
Restoring Function and Confidence
Over the weeks, John noticed a remarkable improvement. His pain levels decreased, sleep quality improved, and lifting objects became easier. The most rewarding moment came when he could return to his yard work, doing what he loved without the nagging fear of shoulder pain.

Struggling With Chronic Aches and Pains? Spinal Mobilization Can Help
Spinal mobilization is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy that focuses on assessing and improving spinal function. It’s designed to relieve joint pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance nerve function — and the relief can extend to discomfort that may not seem spinal-related at all.
Unlike spinal manipulation, which relies on a quick, forceful thrust, mobilization uses slow, controlled, rhythmic movements applied at a pressure and pace matched to your comfort level. It is far less aggressive, yet it can achieve the same outcomes — better motion and less pain — with a much milder response from the body and less post-treatment soreness.
At Infinity Physical Therapy, our therapists use spinal mobilization to help your spine move the way it’s meant to, so you can get back to your day with less pain and more confidence.
The Benefits of Spinal Mobilization
Restores Mobility
Spinal mobilization helps restore natural mobility to spinal joints and improves joint fluid circulation, so your spine can move more freely.
Strengthens & Stabilizes
Treatment works hand-in-hand with exercises that build spinal muscle strength, giving your spine the support it needs to stay pain-free.
Reduces Pain, Fast
Many patients notice a significant reduction in pain and improvement in daily activities after just a few short weeks of treatment.
The Sooner You Start, The Better You’ll Feel
A healthy spine relies on strong core and gluteal muscles, good posture, and good balance and flexibility. Our team will also teach you how to protect your spine going forward, so the pain doesn’t come back. The sooner you address it, the easier it is to stop it from progressing — schedule your appointment at Infinity Physical Therapy today!
Innovative Approaches to Physical Wellness this Thanksgiving Season
Thanksgiving is more than just a day of feasting; it’s a time to come together and celebrate what we’re thankful for. While traditional advice often emphasizes the basics, let’s elevate your approach to physical well-being this season with these cutting-edge tips:
Dynamic Warm-Up Before the Turkey Trot
If you’re planning a Thanksgiving morning run or family games, forget old-school stretching. Use a dynamic warm-up to prep your muscles and boost your range of motion.
Text Neck Prevention
As we catch up on social media or text friends and family Thanksgiving wishes, “text neck” can be a real issue. Counteract this by sitting tall or not at all and doing neck stretches every hour.
Mindfulness Through Movement
Instead of sitting to meditate or relax, try combining mindfulness with gentle movements like Tai Chi or a light stroll through the neighborhood.
Embrace your health by prioritizing your physical and mental well-being to ensure you have the best Thanksgiving yet! 🦃
